Structuring your website for SEO: Some Suggestions

Search engine optimization (SEO) is an ever-evolving field that requires constant attention to detail. One of the most important aspects of SEO is website structure, which can greatly impact your search engine rankings and ultimately, your website's visibility. In this article, we will go through a technical guide on how to structure your website for SEO.

First, it's important to understand that search engines use crawlers to index and understand the content on your website. These crawlers navigate through your website by following links, so it's crucial that your website's structure makes it easy for these crawlers to find and understand your content.

Ensure that your website is crawlable is by using a clear and logical architecture.

This means organizing your pages into categories and subcategories, and linking them accordingly. For example, if you're running an e-commerce website, your categories might be "Men's Clothing," "Women's Clothing," and "Children's Clothing," with subcategories such as "Shirts," "Pants," and "Dresses." By organizing your pages in this way, it's easy for search engines to understand the structure of your website and index your pages accordingly.

Use a sitemap.

A sitemap is a file that lists all of the pages on your website, and it helps search engines understand the overall structure of your website. By including a sitemap on your website, you are making it easier for search engines to find and index all of your pages.

In addition to a logical architecture and a sitemap, it's also important to use descriptive and relevant URLs. URLs that are short, easy to understand, and include keywords can help search engines understand the content on the page, and can also make it easier for users to remember the URL.

An example of a bad URL structure would be "www.example.com/page=1234", this is not only difficult for users to remember but also for search engines to understand what the page is about. A better URL structure would be "www.example.com/men/shirts/casual" which gives search engines a clear understanding of what the page is about and makes it easy for users to understand the content.

In addition to the structure of your website, it's also important to make sure that your website is mobile-friendly. With the growing use of mobile devices, it's crucial to ensure that your website is easily accessible and readable on all devices. Google states that "mobile-friendliness is now a ranking factor for mobile searches," and that "starting April 21, 2015, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal."

Structure your website for speed.

According to Google, "53% of mobile site visits are abandoned if pages take longer than 3 seconds to load." This means that if your website is slow, you're likely to lose a significant number of potential customers. Minimizing HTTP requests will reduce the time it takes for your website to load, as each request adds additional time to the load time. Reducing the size of your images will also help to speed up your website, as larger images take longer to load. You can also use tools like Google's PageSpeed Insights to analyze your website's speed and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, you can use a caching plugin on your website to store commonly used data so it can be quickly loaded the next time a user visits your website.

In conclusion,

a well-structured website means better user experience, faster load time and better chance of ranking higher in search engine results. So, take the time to review your website structure and make the necessary changes to optimize it for SEO. Your business will thank you for it!
